State
The Forestbrook Middle School Mock Trial team, located in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, recently competed in the State Middle School Mock Trial Competition held in December at the Marc Westbrook Judicial Center in Lexington, South Carolina. The competition featured the top ten (10) middle school mock trial teams in the State, with each of the teams having either won or placed runner up in their respective regional competitions held in November. The team performed exceptionally and placed in the top four (4) in its very first year of competition. The team was coached by Attorney Gene Vaught of McCutchen, Mumford, Vaught, O’Dea & Geddie, who was assisted by Attorney Candice Lively, formerly of the same law firm and presently employed by the Horry County Solicitor’s Office. Teacher coaches from Forestbrook Middle School were Joe Boswell, Stephanie Necessary, Eileen Patonay, and Tess Vega. Administrative personnel providing assistance were Principal Margaret Sordian and Dr. Sherilyn Duquette.
Students from the team receiving special recognition for their performances at the State competition were Joseph Mateo (Most Effective Attorney Award), Dante Moore (Most Effective Attorney Award), and Dallas Strawn (who received TWO awards for Most Effective Witness). The team consisted of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders from Forestbrook Middle School, none of whom had ever participated in Mock Trial before. This year’s case was a criminal case involving alleged “cyber stalking”.
